Why you need a one-page business plan template

Creating a business plan (even a one-pager) is a big task when working without a business planning template.

And, if you’re planning for the very first time and have no experience in plan creation whatsoever, it’s very likely to feel lost, miss out on including critical information, and spend a lot more time than expected when beginning with a bright white canvas.

So, even if you can do this, it’s often more hassle than it’s worth it. Here are a few other benefits that support our suggestion:

  • Easy and fast to create or update
  • A great format for quick feedback
  • Can be a great idea validation tool
  • Investor-focused plan creation approach

Hope this little exercise helped you understand why you need this template. From now on, it will all be about the contents of our one-page plan template.

What is included in our free one-page plan template?

When we first released this template, our team researched dozens of one-page plan templates available online, but all seem to be lacking a thing or two. So, we prepared our own version of it.

We divided the entire plan into five necessary sections, which include:

  • About your business
  • Sales and marketing
  • Execution
  • Financial plan
  • SWOT analysis

Let us explain what all these sections include.

Try and keep each section limited to 1-2 sentences or 3-4 bullets to keep your plan within one page.

About your business

The purpose of this section is to present details about your business concept, what it does, who it serves, and who your competitors are.

  1. Business identity
It’s your business introduction and an overview of your core offerings, value proposition, and what makes your business stand out in the market.
  2. The problem
This is the opportunity for you to highlight the key issue or gap in the market that your business addresses. A strong problem statement means a strong plan.
  3. Your solution
Explain how your product or service offerings solve the problem you mentioned earlier.
  4. Target market
What does your ideal customer look like? Where do they reside? Define your ideal customers, including their demographics and behaviors. It helps investors learn more about the demand for your offerings.
  5. Competition
Who are your direct and indirect competitors in the market? Identify and list your industry competitors and briefly explain what differentiates (your competitive advantage) your offerings from theirs.

Sales and Marketing

Moving to the next section, this section is dedicated to sales and marketing strategies and channels.

  1. Marketing strategy
Describe how you plan to reach your target audience and promote your product or service. These strategies are those that help you increase visibility and attract potential customers to your product or service.
  2. Sales channels
Outline the methods and platforms you’ll use to sell your product or service. This could include physical locations, e-commerce, direct sales, or partnerships that help you reach your target market efficiently.

Execution

The section highlights milestones and assigns responsibilities for implementing the business concept. It mentions key milestones, team roles, and essential resources or partnerships for seamless operations.

  1. Milestones
Set specific short- and long-term goals to track your progress and business growth. Setting both short and long-term milestones helps you track progress and adjust your strategy as needed.
  2. Team
List key team members who play crucial roles in your business. Include their specific roles, relevant experience, and how they contribute to achieving the company’s goals.
  3. Partners and Resources
This section outlines strategic partnerships, suppliers, or collaborations essential for business growth. These could be suppliers, strategic alliances, or key tools and resources necessary for daily operations.

Financial Plan

  1. Revenue streams
Break down how your business plans to generate revenue, whether through product sales, services, subscriptions, or other methods. Include different income sources that are essential to the business model.
  2. Expenses
List anticipated operational costs, such as rent, salaries, utilities, marketing, and supplies. This is critical to understand financial obligations and manage cash flow effectively.
  3. Funding required
Clearly state the total amount of capital needed to launch or grow your business. Include details on how the funds will be allocated for product development, marketing, or expanding operations.

SWOT Analysis

SWOT analyses help you identify both internal (Strengths and Weaknesses) and external (Opportunities and Threats) factors affecting your business.

In SWOT analysis, SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.

  • Strength (Internal): Highlight your business’s core advantages and competencies.
  • Weaknesses (Internal): Address the internal challenges your business might face.
  • Opportunities (External): List the external factors that can benefit your business growth.
  • Threats (External): Identify potential external risks or obstacles to your business.

This is all there is to a single page business plan.
